How Can Dental Crowns Help Your Smile?

If you have a weak or damaged tooth find out how a dental crown could help.

A dental crown or cap is a dental restoration designed to look just like the crown of your tooth. Offering the wearer both restorative and cosmetic benefits, crowns are cemented into place by our Yorba Linda, CA, dentist, Dr. Richard Hamaty, and designed to fit over a weak or damaged tooth. Read on to learn when to receive a dental crown and the benefits of this commonly placed restoration:

When crowns are needed

In these instances, your Yorba Linda, CA, dentist may recommend that you receive a dental crown:

  • You have a large filling that is no longer supporting the tooth
  • You have a weak tooth that is prone to fracturing
  • You have a fractured, broken, or cracked tooth
  • You need to cover a dental implant
  • You need to support a dental bridge to replace missing teeth
  • You have a severely misshapen or discolored tooth
  • You’ve just had to undergo root canal treatment

As you can see, there are many instances in which someone could benefit from receiving a dental crown, which is why this is one of the most common dental restorations.

How is a crown placed?

Before you receive your crown, the tooth will need to be prepped. To begin, your dentist will numb the area around the tooth with a local anesthetic. Then, once the area is numb, we will file down the tooth to make room for the crown. Next, impressions are taken so that the dental lab has the exact measurements of your tooth from which to create your custom crown. Since it can take weeks for a crown to be crafted, your dentist will place a temporary crown over the tooth to protect it.

A crown is often made from a durable, tooth-colored material such as porcelain that is designed to look just like the rest of your natural smile. Once the crown has been fabricated, you’ll come back into the office so that we can check the fit and cement the crown permanently into place.
